Jakarta, December 29th, 2021
Indonesia officially assumed the Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20).
This is the first time a developing nation from the Asian region has been appointed to lead the forum, which has helped transform the global economy for the past 23 years.
The G20 presidency, which Indonesia will hold in 2022, will also enable a significant opportunity for Indonesia to chair the Business 20 or B20 forum, which is widely known as The G20 primary engagement group comprising business sectors from around the G20 member countries..
Mrs. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, Coordinator of Vice Chairmen III of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been entrusted with the first duty for Indonesia to chair the forum, succeeding Emma Marcegaglia, who served as Chair during the B20 Italy 2021 presidency..
Becoming the first female leader from a developing economic country background in Asia to assume this role is surely a great responsibility.
At the same time, this is also an opportunity to voice out the principles of inclusiveness and equality in shaping the direction of global economic recovery. Coinciding with Mother's Day which falls every December 22, Mrs. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani shared about how she channeled her care and efforts to promote women's empowerment in the country through B20 Indonesia.
Empowering Women, Empowering the Economy
The low representation of women in the global economy and business leadership is a complex problem. "This starts from the unequal quality of education for girls, the imbalance in employment opportunities, to the lack of women's access to benefits from the formal economy," said Mrs. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani.
"From the point of view of business actors, we realized that many companies currently have not taken action to address the gender gap. Imagine how big the potential for economic growth we can achieve if more women can participate in the economy," said Mrs. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani.
For the record, the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that empowering women in the global economy can generate an additional $28 trillion in world GDP growth.
She continued, inclusiveness itself is becoming an issue that captures global attention. The G20 and all groups within it also encourage this development, including through empowering women to maximize the potential of the global economy.
Previously, Australia's G20 presidency had embarked on a "25x25" commitment to reduce the gender gap in the labor market participation by 25% by 2025. The baton was continued by Italy's G20 and B20 and their entire task force last year, targeting more, better, and equal-paying jobs for women.
This year, B20 Indonesia will explore some of the specific policy areas highlighted in the previous B20 recommendations, while continuing to encourage knowledge sharing and investment into women-led businesses between G20 countries. This is of course done by taking into account the diversity of the economy and population in each country.
To carry out this mission, the B20 Indonesia Presidency formed a Women in Business Action Council in addition to six other task forces (Trade and Investment, Future of Work and Education, Finance & Infrastructure, Energy, Climate and Sustainability, Integrity and Compliance). None other than, for B20 being a catalyst to minimize the gender gap, by producing policy recommendations that facilitate more women to lead and participate in the economic sector.
"Our strategic priority, which is to encourage collaborative, innovative and inclusive sustainable growth, will be through strengthening the resilience of women-led businesses and accelerating infrastructure support for women entrepreneurs and MSMEs," said Mrs. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani.
"This effort is also carried out through increasing the digital capabilities of the female workforce, strengthening the basis for leadership and fair workforce participation, and eradicating gender-based violence in the workplace."
As a final result, B20 Indonesia aims to create One Global Women Empowerment, which facilitates government, business, and other stakeholders to facilitate support to lift women out of poverty.
